Star African American Military Leader and Omega Man
Will Headline Gamma Pi's Annual Achievement Week Observance
General William "Kip" Ward
Achievement Week is one of the most anticipated programs every year throughout Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In Gamma Pi chapter, the annual observance program always draws a large crowd from the community. This year,on November 17, Gamma Pi welcomes Brother General William"Kip" Ward as keynote speaker, following in a long line of high-profile Omega leaders who have highlighted the chapter's Achievement Week activities.
U.S. Congresswoman Donna Edwards and Brother Maryland State Senator Ulysses Currie attended last year's program along with Prince George's County Executive Brother Rushern Baker, who served as keynote speaker in 2011.Previous speakers include USDA official Brother Dr. Joe Leonard, Jr. in 2010, local television anchor Leon Harris in 2009, Bowie State University president Brother Dr. Mickey Burnim in 2008, Little Rock Nine civil rights icon Brother Ernest Green in 2007 and Brother James Felder, the only black member of President Kennedy’s military pallbearers team, in 2006
The event is FREE to the public. Brothers from area chapters are invited to attend and fellowship with Gamma Pi.
“Our community comes out in large numbers and it is also an opportunity for our chapter to thank and recognize the many leaders within our community for their contributions,” said Basileus Gordon Everett, Sr. “Last year was very special because it was the 100th year anniversary of the Fraternity. This year is special because it is the beginning of the next 100 years for Omega."
During Achievement Weeks, Gamma Pi bestows chapter service awards, community service awards and also presents more than $20,000 in scholarships to local Prince George’s County students. There will also be special performances from the Surrattsville High School Gospel Choir and the Flowers High School Jazz Ensemble.
Each year, the 700-plus worldwide individual chapters of Omega Psi Phi observe Achievement Week as part of the Fraternity’s founding, on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Originally designated to promote “the study of Negro life and history,” Achievement Week today has broadened to also recognize local and national citizens who have made noteworthy contributions toward improving the quality of life for African Americans. Gamma Pi was chartered in Prince George’s County in 1973.
